Billings Parking Problems Continue

Mayor Hanel mentioned on  the Billings Morning News recently that they are putting together a parking commission of sorts in Billings. In my opinion this is long overdue in Billings.

The growth of Billings over the last three years because of the Bakken and just generally a better economy does at times create parking challenges in Billings.  The problems are not just centered in the downtown area but everywhere.

I heard of a story of a two businesses battling it out for parking spaces on 24th and Broadwater.  One business closes for the day at 6 p.m..  The other business is open till about 9 p.m. These two are neighboring businesses.

The story went this way.  Business one closes up at 6 p.m. business two customers parked in the empty parking stalls in front of business one for overflow parking.  Business one didn’t like that so they started having cars towed away.  To me that is just rude.  It is just a slab of asphalt that is being used with no harm to the business that is closed up for the day!  Plus, what about the good neighbor policy?

What is so wrong with using an empty parking space if it is not going to be used until the next morning?  Plus the way I see it, as consumers of many products in Billings, if business one has my car towed then they lose a customer in the future.  Treat people, and in this case “potential customers” the way you would want to be treated.

The only exception would be the abuse of taking handicapped parking places anytime.
