Billy Currington, ‘We Are Tonight’ [Listen]
Billy Currington‘s new single ‘We Are Tonight’ tells a country roads, truck bed love story. That’s not an original narrative in 2013, but his emphatic, soulful style allows the title track from his new album to become a refreshing, anthemic party song that will still sound good sober.
Another reason ‘We Are Tonight’ feels new is that it’s not written by the most popular songwriters in Nashville. Marc Beeson, Josh Osborne and Sam Hunt do well as individual songwriters, but this collaboration is fresh. Sharp, descriptive lyrics add color to each verse before a powerful chorus becomes the song’s signature moment.
“Summer comin’ through a rolled down window / Tearin’ down an almost two lane back road / Freedom and fireflies in the air,” Currington sings to begin the song.
The country star and his producer build toward a climax at each chorus by turning up the drums and dropping the more traditional country instruments deep into the mix. The finished product is definitely country, but it extends a handshake to mainstream pop-rock, as well.
“It’s a Friday night, it’s a small town girl / Everything is right and we rule the world / Two 12s in the truck back, beating / A bunch of rock stars on a riverbank singing / Everything we wanna be / We are, we are, we are tonight.”
While other singles from the Georgia hitmaker have become hits because of his personal, lighthearted way of telling stories, ‘We Are Tonight’ relies on emotion generated from a few strokes of detail. Still, it feels pretty good when he gets to that final chorus. It’s the sort of high fans tend to want to repeat, even if they don’t seek it out.
Why Fans Will Love It: The more you listen to it, the more it becomes a great weekend anthem.
Key Lyrics: “Two 12s in the truck back, beating / A bunch of rock stars on a riverbank singing / Everything we wanna be / We are, we are, we are tonight”
Did You Know?: Co-writer Sam Hunt (Kenny Chesney’s ‘Come Over’) was a star on UAB’s football team before beginning a country music career. He’s now emerging as a solo artist with his song ‘Raised on It’ getting significant airplay on SiriusXM radio.
