When Greta and Bob Mathis, a United States Air Force General, retired to Bozeman, Montana in 1984, they started the first Eagle Mount organization. In 1988, the Eagle Mount program in Billings began with an adaptive ski program at Red Lodge Mountain Resort. Eagle Mount Billings became an independent affiliate in 1994 and has grown to include programs in arts & crafts, bicycling, day camp, equestrian, golf, social night, swim and a walking program in collaboration with the YMCA.

There are now independent Eagle Mount organizations in Bozeman, Great Falls, Helena, and Billings, Montana. In 2008 Eagle Mount Billings celebrated twenty years of providing adaptive recreation to children and adults with disabilities. An honored guest of the Morning Bulletin on Newsradio 95, Tommy and Bell thank General Mathis for his service to our country and to our community.
