On Friday (Oct. 9), Carrie Underwood surprised fans with "Heartbeat," a new song from her Storyteller album. The soulful love song is an understated statement that paints a vivid picture of love in the moonlight.

Zach Crowell and Ashley Gorley helped Underwood write the song, the second fans have heard from the singer’s upcoming fifth studio album (Oct. 23). They contrast love in a crowded city with two lovers sharing a quiet, intimate moment outdoors, alone. Sam Hunt helps Underwood with the chorus:

“Tonight I wanna drive so far and only find static on the radio / We can’t see those city lights and I like the way you look in firefly glow / Saying everything without making a sound / A cricket choir in the background / Underneath the harvest moon / Standing on your shoes in my bare feet / Dancing to the rhythm of your heartbeat.”

Underwood’s second verse is even more personal. Little details help paint the tender moment she’s begging for: “I wanna feel it like a kick drum / Beating faster in your chest / I wanna feel you holding on to me / Make me hold my breath / You pull me closer, my head on your shoulder / Baby we won’t need a song / Make a falling star wish, one more slow kiss / What are we waiting on.”

Fans get “Heartbeat” (and "Smoke Break") when they pre-order Storyteller on iTunes. She calls today “new music Friday” on Twitter, leaving open the possibility that one more new song might be revealed next Friday, before the Oct. 23 release.
