Earth Day 2013

Another Earth Day and more chances for us to appreciate this big spinning globe we live on.

Despite all the chaos in Boston and Texas this week, I spent the last couple of days gathering different opportunities you have to celebrate around the Magic City.

On Saturday volunteers are being sought starting at 9:30 at the Audubon Center, located at 7026 S. Billings Blvd. They will be lending a hand restoring the riparian habitat and cleaning up the grounds. Volunteers will also be planting willows, pot seedlings and be picking up trash.

This is the fifth annual event is sponsored and organized by Montana Audubon Conservation Education Center. You can volunteer, by calling 294-5099.

On Sunday, the actual Earth Day, there is a campus cleanup on the campus of Rocky Mountain College, with several activities and live music is planned on “The Green”. Americorps volunteers will be painting rain barrels and judges are needed for the RMC eco-art competition from noon to 3 p.m.

Live music will be performed by Ellen and the Old School. There is also a barbecue is from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Cost is $7 with funds going to the club. Kids and RMC students get in free.

The Good Earth Market will be hosting its seventh annual celebration on Monday in its parking lot. Activities beginning at 10 a.m. Organic and locally raised beef brisket from B-Bar Ranch and vegetarian sloppy joes will be available during lunch 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Local producers including Danly Farms, Negaard Produce and Greenhouse, Kenny’s Double D Salsa and Das Kuchenhaus will have products for sale.

One of the highlights of the day will be a demonstration of solar cooking. Folk musician Justin Johnson will perform.

Whatever you choose to do this weekend, I want to urge you to take a moment and at least reflect on what a great planet we live on and how lucky we are.
