Actor Tom Hiddleston is set to portray Hank Williams in the new film 'I Saw the Light.'

The movie, directed by Marc Abraham ('Children of Men,' 'In Time') will chronicle Williams' rise to fame along with the tragic effects the spotlight had on the 'I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry' singer's life,' according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Production has secured rights to the Country Music Hall of Famer's music catologue, including such hits as 'I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry,' 'Hey Good Lookin'' and 'Your Cheatin’ Heart.'

Hiddleston will do his own singing in the film. 'I Saw the Light' is quite a turn from his usual flick making; the actor has appeared in Marvel's 'Thor,' 'The Avengers' and 'Thor: The Dark World.' There was definitely no guitar strumming and singing done in those films!

Despite his major country music success, Williams had a difficult life. Severe back pain, alcoholism and prescription drug abuse affected his health in highly negative ways, and he was dismissed by the Grand Ole Opry because of unreliability and frequent drunkenness. The singer died on January 1, 1953, at the age of 29 as a result of heart failure caused by pills and alcohol.
