Among HBO's 2014 offerings, we've kept our eye most on that Cary Fukunaga-directed 'True Detective,' more for its dark and dreary drama than its all-stair pairing of Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. Apart from the most recent teasers, HBO has released a new invitation to the set video that lets McConaughey and Harrelson put in their own words what will have people talking about the project.

HBO's 'True Detective’ follows investigators Rustin Cohle (McConaughey) and Martin Hart (Harrelson), whose lives intertwine during a 17-year hunt for a Louisiana serial killer. Their investigation of a gruesome 1995 murder cuts through testimony from the detectives in 2012, after the case re-opens. The eight-episode series also stars Shea Wigham ('Boardwalk Empire'), Kevin Dunn (‘Veep‘), Michelle Monaghan (‘Open‘), Alexandra Daddario (‘Percy Jackson‘) and Elizabeth Reaser (‘Twilight‘).

Among the tidbits learned in HBO's new set preview, McConaughey had originally auditioned for Harrelson's part, only to decide he had more interest in bringing the stoic Rustin Cohle to life, playing against type opposite the more "gregarious" Hart. Both characters will no doubt leave an impression, as 'True Detective' will pick up with an entirely new cast, should HBO take it to a second season.
