Sugar beets account for between $70 Million and $100 Million per year of Billings' regional economy. This year however it could be on the lower end of that range as harvests have been so good this year that there is a sugar glut in the U.S. market driving down prices to their lowest levels in years.

As a result the Western Sugar Beet processing plant just south of downtown is in full swing and of course anyone who lives here in Billings doesn't have to be an agricultural expert to know when the processing starts... you just need your nose. I actually like the smell because, to me, it has the aroma of roasted corn.
