Keith Urban Pays Emotional Tribute to His Departed Father on ‘American Idol’ [Watch]
Keith Urban shared a special moment with one of the contestants on the final season of American Idol, becoming visibly emotional as he talked about his beloved father, who passed away in December of 2015.
Tristan McIntosh is competing this year, bringing a country slant to the stage, and on Thursday (March 10) she shared that her grandfather was the one who introduced her to country music. Urban responded by opening up about his father, saying he "got me into country music."
Entertainment Tonight caught up with the superstar after the show and asked him what had touched him so deeply about that moment.
"The support that [Tristan] got from [her grandfather] — especially in the realm of country music. I felt a real strong connection with that," Urban shares, adding that he misses his father "every day," but that "I see him in our daughters' eyes as well."
Urban is a devoted family man, and his father's example also leads him in that aspect of his life.
"I'm just trying to be a good husband and raise our kids right — do all the right things he taught me," he adds.
Robert Urban entered hospice care at the same time that his son opened his exhibit at the Country Music Hall of Fame, which contains some of the early stage costumes he sewed for Keith. He passed away just days later after a long battle with cancer. Urban reflected wistfully on his father's influence at a press conference at the opening, saying, “My dad particularly always thought it was important that I dressed like a performer. A lot of these country music talent quests I did in Australia, they often had categories for best dressed male or best dressed female and I often won. Sometimes it was the only thing I won."
"So [the exhibit] is bittersweet a little bit because [my dad] is the catalyst for all of this. My dad is the catalyst for me living in America," he added. "I want to thank Dad for starting me on this journey.”
