“Love Gone Wrong” Story Submission – “Medical Mother”

This tale of “Love Gone Wrong” could have had a genuinely tragic ending, and we’re glad that everything turned out okay for this listener, who we’ll call “Sherry.”  The next time you’re worried about meeting your date’s parents for dinner, remember Sherry’s story and know that there are plenty of worse things that could happen.

I had just started dating this guy when we decided to take a trip up to Malta so that I could meet his family. We had only been in town for a little over 12 hours.  The men went out hunting, while the girls decided to play some cards and have a couple of drinks.

We ran out of tasty adult beverages, so we had a friend’s daughter drive us to the gas station to get more. On the way back to the house, we were involved in a pretty bad car accident and had to get rushed to the hospital.

This would normally not be a funny story, except my date’s mother was the head nurse at the hospital, and got called to assist the hospital with our injuries. My injuries required me to be air-lifted back to Billings to be treated by an orthopedic doctor. My boyfriend’s mother ended up flying to Billings on the plane with me.  That was the first time I met my future mother-in-law.

Between the ins and outs of my consciousness, I remember her telling me that she had picked out the smallest catheter that she could get, and she would be very gentle while she inserted it. Needless to say, after we got married and had children, there wasn’t anything I was ashamed to hide from her!

I was thankful that she was there, but it was not the way that I had intended to meet my then boyfriend’s and now my husband’s parents.

That’s one first impression that they’ll never forget, Sherry!

Check back every day for more tales of Love Gone Wrong!
