Man Accused of Using Country Star’s Name to Scam Family of Sick Toddler

Police in Louisville, Ky. say a man scammed a family and a local business out of $9,000 by claiming he could arrange a Jason Aldean concert to raise money for a sick 2-year-old girl. Kyle Nunn has been arrested and charged with two felony counts of theft by deception.

Neither Nunn, 30, nor his stepfather are associated with Aldean. According to WAVE-TV in Louisville, the accused approached a bar and grill called Baxter’s 942 saying he could plan a benefit concert for Addilyn Roberts, a toddler diagnosed with Pre-B ALL leukemia in September of 2013. The bar’s management believed Aldean would be playing and wrote Nunn a check for $6,000. The singer’s representatives have not yet returned a request for comment.

Soon after, in October, Nunn allegedly asked Roberts’ parents for money, and they provided a $3,000 check from Addie’s Army, her foundation. Nunn asked to have the check made out to Davis Cooper, a person he said was affiliated with Aldean.

According to WDRB in Louisville, Cooper ended up being Nunn’s stepfather, and both men were seen cashing checks. A warrant says Nunn kept the money, and the concert — scheduled to take place the day after Thanksgiving — never happened. Part of the reason Nunn was able to gain the family’s trust was that they were friends from high school.

“How you can target someone that you know, a child at that, battling cancer,” Angela Roberts (Addie’s mother) says. “It’s just heart-wrenching to think someone you went to school with someone you totally trust would do something like that.”

A post at the Addie’s Army Facebook page mentions the alleged fraud, but doesn’t go into detail. There are several photos of the little girl to be found there in addition to updates on her condition. She continues to battle the leukemia through chemotherapy, but the description at her YouCaring page says the survival rate is 85-90 percent.
