Unintentional injuries cause more than half of childhood deaths in Montana, according to state and local health reports.

In fact, the leading cause of injuries for kids up to 14 years old is falls, followed by poisoning and motor vehicle collisions, according to according to the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services 2012 injury statistic report and Safe Kids Yellowstone County Car Seat Check annual reports. Motor vehicle crashes are the No. 1 cause of injury for 14- to 19-year-olds.

In an effort to help reduce the number of injuries to children and raise awareness about child safety issues, Billings residents will have the opportunity to educate themselves on the myriad safety issues and challenges facing children. This chance comes courtesy of the Ninth Annual "Safe Kids Yellowstone County Day" on Saturday, Sept. 12 at Rimrock Mall, 300 S. 24th St.

The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Center Court of the mall and a few areas outside of the main entrance.

Fire safety, bike helmet safety, water safety and disaster preparedness are among the topics that will be discussed at this year’s event. There will be numerous activities for children and families to enjoy, including the chance to pet an animal from ZooMontana, tour a fire truck and see a dive team demonstration.

Families can also enjoy free car seat safety checks and spinal screenings, as well as build their own disaster preparedness kits and pledge not to text and drive through Allstate’s “X the TXT” campaign.
