Even though there is technically more than a month left of summer, for many Montanans, this weekend represents the "end of summer" because school will be starting next week. No doubt there were many of us who had plans that involved fishing or floating on the Yellowstone. As of Friday, this is no longer allowed due to a parasite that has already killed tens of thousands of fish.

Locally, the area from Gardiner to Laurel has been closed for fishing and other recreational activities. This closure is indefinite as it is unknown at this point how long it will take for the waters to be safe again. To be clear, the parasite causing this massive fish kill is not dangerous to humans, but humans can certainly help the parasite to spread by not properly cleaning, draining and drying their equipment before going to a different waterway.
