As the kids head back to school this week, the taxpayers will be picking up the lunch tab for students at 86 Montana schools.  Those schools will be part of a new federal program offering free lunch to all students, not just low income students based on need.

The $16 billion dollar program seeks to "erase the stigma" for underprivileged kids who have benefited from free lunch programs in the past.  In order to qualify for the expanded free lunch program, at least 40% of students in each school must fall below the income criteria.

Which begs the question, what about the stigma for low income students in affluent areas?  It stands to reason that the stigma for those kids would be worse in schools where most of the students can afford to buy their lunch as opposed to those where a high percentage are underprivileged.

And while we're on the subject of stigmas, this is just the latest example of the political correctness that is taking over our schools. Our kids are growing up in  a day and age when everyone gets a medal and there are no winners or losers.  If we're so concerned about the stigma, why not just give everyone an A?

Sure, there are families who struggle to feed their children. And we all that school lunches aren't cheap.  But why should we pay for everyone's lunch, especially the kids who can afford it?  Somewhere in Montana, a plastic surgeon's child will get a free lunch today that you paid for. It's just another entitlement program that we're picking up the check for.
