‘The Killing’ Season 3: New Case Details and Photos!

The Killing Season 3 Spoilers Photos

June 2 will see the long-awaited debut of ‘The Killing‘ season 3 on AMC, a prospect that few expected by this time last year given the mediocre critical reception and ratings. The new year for detectives Holder and Linden will start in a drastically different place, picking up an old case that connects to Linden’s past, but what devastating events will see the pair come back together? Learn all about ‘The Killing’ season 3’s new (one-season long) case inside!

Those skeptical of AMC murder-mystery drama ‘The Killing’s upcoming third season needn’t fret, as showrunner Veena Sud confirms to Entertainment Weekly that “In season 3, the story lends itself to one season. We’re going to solve it at the end.” ‘The Killing’ got off to a promising start on AMC, until the creative decision to expand the Rosie Larsen case by an additional season took a great deal of critical and commercial heat. The AMC series was all but dead until Netflix stepped in to co-finance production, in exchange for early rights to the episodes.

As for the new season itself, Sud previewed that the two-hour June 2 premiere would see Linden (‘World War Z‘s Mireille Enos) in a very different place than we left her, having left the force and taken a job working a ferry, as well as a much younger lover. Linden only returns to the Seattle police force when former partner Stephen Holder (‘Robocop‘s Joel Kinnaman) finds himself investigating a brutal string of murders that connect to Linden’s past in a surprising manner.

“Sarah’s secret that we discovered last season was that she had a break over a case three years ago and that case put her into a psychiatric unit for several days,” Sud says. “She’s always had this nagging feeling that something wasn’t quite right, and we’ve seen hints of that case over the last two seasons.”

Sud reports that the new case drew inspiration from real-life incidents, including photographer Mary Ellen Mark’s work depicting street youths in the 1970s, and the police investigation of Washington serial killer Gary Ridgway, which involved 50 women disappearing over a course of 20 years. “The police ‘murder board’ had all these pictures, most were mugshots…staring at you, not smiling. The more I looked at those photos I started to imagine the burden of responsibility those cops felt seeing those women look at them every day.”

In addition to the casting of Peter Sarsgaard as death row inmate Ray Seward, scheduled to be executed for a crime brought to justice by Linden herself, ‘The Killing’ season 3 also boasts ‘Battlestar Galactica’ vet Aaron Douglas, ‘Flashpoint’s’ Hugh Dillon, Johnny Ray Gill, Amy Semeitz, Max Fowler and Elias Koteas among its cast. ‘The Killing’ season 3 understandably won’t involve the Larsen Family, nor will seasons 1 and 2 regular Mayor Darren Richmond (Billy Campbell) appear.
