Tim’s Place, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, is open from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 in the afternoon, and if you’re in the neighborhood and in need of a cup of coffee and a warm embrace, look no further.
Owner Tim Harris wakes up at 5:30 every morning, gets dressed, drives to work, and then does a one-man dance-off in the parking lot on his way from the car to the building. Since he was 14, he wanted to own a restaurant, and now that he does, he enjoys every minute of it. He likes to tell his cooks that they’re the best cooks in the world. He’s built up an extremely loyal client base. His father, Keith, couldn’t be prouder. “All of us who are dads want our kids to wind up independent, happy, secure,” Keith said.
All of this comes in addition to the fact that Tim Harris is the only restaurant owner in the country who also has Down syndrome. Billed as “the world’s friendliest restaurant,” the official hug counter on Tim’s Place’s website says shows that he has given out over 32,475 hugs so far.
“I am a lean, mean hugging machine,” Harris says. If you have the chance, take him up on that.
