The holidays tend to bring out the best in people. I've seen it all over Billings. It can also bring out the worst in others even though we try to focus on the good. Seen that in the Magic City as well. Charities flourish with donations of every kind and the gift giving is beyond comprehension. The generosity of people is more this time of year than at any other time and it's extremely refreshing. That's what I love about Billings.

But what if you're a police officer responding to a report of shoplifting and being left with a decision that weighs heavy on your heart?

That's exactly what happened to an officer in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

When the officer arrived at the grocery where the crime had been committed, he quickly realized a difference in the situation he was investigating. You see, the accused woman had stolen cake mix, shortening and frosting.

She wasn't out to give herself a treat. Instead, hard times had fallen and she needed these items to bake her son a birthday cake so his spirits would be lifted.

The police officer found himself with a difficult decision and I feel he made the right one.

Instead of charging the woman with the crime, he paid for her items. He said he didn't feel right about taking a birthday cake away from her son. He said he made sure she knew what she did was wrong but ultimately took care of the tab.

Good on that officer for doing what was right.
