Let's face it. We live in a country where the divorce rate is over 50 percent and everywhere we turn, there is something or someone trying to tear that relationship apart. If you want a long-lasting relationship, you must focus, do the little things, be there for each other in good and bad and so much more.

It's hard work and not for the faint of heart. Trust me, I know all too well how hard it is. I've been divorced, remarried and almost divorced again. It's a tough world, but if you want something, you need to fight for it.

My wife and I have tried a few things that seem to be working more than they ever have.

After almost nine years of marriage, we find cooking with each other is a big deal. Family meals can be tough especially with five kids. It can be a lot for one person to take on. I don't know how to cook very well so I leave that to Christyn. However, I cut the fruits and vegetables and take that playful instruction from her whenever it is needed.

Personal time is also important. That has been pretty difficult lately, but a plan is in place and followed. For example, she will join me at the Chris Young concert because he is one of our favorites and we just need that time together.

Supporting each other on good days and bad days is probably the biggest kicker. Without the support, there's really no base for anything else. We have to rely on each and get that encouragement when the time calls for it.
