Where Did Karen Gallagher Come From? A Look at My Genealogy
Have you seen the new season of ‘Who Do You Think You Are’? on TCL? My daughter Bailey and I were watching it last night and Kelly Clarkson was the celebrity learning a bout her ancestors. She learned that she is a descendant of Senator I.R. Rose that supported President Abraham Lincoln’s party and it struck me that I really don’t know much about my family’s genealogy.
My knowledge is very limited and is based on stories that may parents have told me. I really don’t know much about my immediate grandparents on either side.
For instance I know that Francis, my grandfather on my dad’s side came to American from Ireland and that he died at an early age. I did meet Mabel, my grandmother on my dad’s side twice that I can remember. I recall her to be a small woman with a big attitude.
As for my maternal grandparents Ann and Harold, again not much t can tell you about them. I know that they were divorced.
I met my grandfather once when I was about 8 years old, he was a cranky, mean man and I can’t say that I feel like I missed much by not knowing him.
My grandmother Ann would come visit in the summer time from Oregon and I remember that she would bring agate jewelry that she had made from agates she found on her travels. I also recall that she was always judgmental of my mom and compared her to one of her sisters.
As I sat and thought about it, I was saddened that I could truly say that I don’ t have any great memories of either set of grandparents or that I even know anything about my great-grandparents.
It’s funny but sad that we think we know where we came from and where we get our traits or strengths, but until I watched ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ I didn’t realize I don’t know much.
Here is what I do know, my parents love each and everyone of their children and are proud of all of us, well maybe not always, but mostly.
Just how much do you know about your ancestors?
