Summer Blood Drives
You may not see an immediate correlation between the hot temperatures and the need for blood; however, the scorching heat has disrupted numerous blood drives throughout the country.
According to the American Red Cross, nearly 100 blood drives were disrupted in July alone.
This, combined with summer travel and activities, has resulted in a shortage of 19,000 donations.
Hospital Blood Demand Outpaces Donations
Hospitals rely heavily on blood donations, especially during the summer months.
The demand for blood remains high this year and is currently outpacing the rate of donations.
Hospital Z United States is particularly concerned with the shortage of O blood, which is essential to emergency rooms.
