Beginning on October 1, Billings will officially be home to the FBI’s 56th field office. That’s a big deal, not just for our city, but for the entire state of Montana. Until now, Montana has only had satellite offices overseen by the Salt Lake City Field Office. With Billings taking on the role of a full field office, it means more resources, stronger partnerships, and faster responses right here at home.

FBI Returns to Montana After Decades Away

Back in 1989, the FBI closed its Butte field office and shifted Montana’s cases under the Salt Lake City Division. For more than three decades, that meant our state had no full field office of its own, only smaller satellite offices scattered around. Fast forward to today, and the opening of a new field office in Billings marks a historic return. It’s more than just a change in logistics, it’s a signal that Montana once again has the FBI’s full attention and resources dedicated right here at home.

New Billings Office Brings Faster Response and Stronger Local Ties

When crimes happen in small towns and across wide rural areas, response times and resources can sometimes be stretched thin. By establishing a field office in Billings, the FBI is putting boots on the ground in Montana’s largest city, making sure investigations don’t have to wait for teams to fly in from out of state. It also means closer connections with local police, sheriff’s offices, and Tribal law enforcement.

FBI Field Office to Tackle Major Crimes in Montana

If you’re wondering what this office will handle, the list is long. The FBI looks into violent crime, terrorism, cybercrime, organized crime, public corruption, drug and gang activity, white-collar crime, and civil rights violations. They also investigate crimes against children, human trafficking, and crimes on Tribal lands. Having a field office here means Montana communities are more directly connected to the agency that takes on some of the most serious threats to public safety.

FBI to Work Closely With Montana Agencies

The FBI doesn’t work alone. In fact, one of its strengths is teaming up with other agencies - federal, state, local, and Tribal. By setting up shop in Billings, the agency is sending a message that Montana is a priority. This move will allow agents to collaborate more closely with local law enforcement, share resources, and tackle complex investigations more efficiently.
