MontanaFair 2026 Prohibited Items: What’s Off-Limits This Year Inside the Arena (Only)

MontanaFair rolls back into MetraPark Friday, August 7 through Saturday, August 15 with the usual lineup of carnival lights, deep-fried everything, and enough livestock to remind you somebody's kid spent all summer training a steer for this.

Whether you're headed for the midway with the kids, a night at the grandstand, or just to walk from vendor to vendor and see what's new, there's a decent list of stuff that won't make it past the gate with you.

Why MontanaFair Has a Prohibited Items List

Most of these rules exist for reasons that make sense once you think about them. A packed fairground with rides, animals, and thousands of people moving through narrow walkways isn't the place for coolers, glass bottles, or anything that could be mistaken for a weapon. Security teams aren't trying to ruin your day. They're trying to keep a few hundred strangers' kids from tripping over your camping chair or getting hit by a stray drone.

Avoid the Gate Line: Check Your Bag Before You Go

Nobody wants to hold up the line while they walk a cooler back to the truck, and nobody wants to hand over a pocket knife at the gate and then remember it three days later. Knowing what's off the list before you park saves you both.

Items Prohibited on the MontanaFair Grounds

Firearms and Weapons: Firearms, knives, and other weapons are strictly prohibited on MetraPark grounds and inside all MetraPark facilities.

Animals: Pets and other animals are not permitted inside MetraPark facilities. Exceptions are made for service animals and animals participating in an exhibit or show.  Do not leave animals unattended inside or tied to a vehicle. Animal control officers may remove and impound animals for their safety.

First Interstate Arena Clear Bag Policy:  The clear bag policy applies only to events inside First Interstate Arena, including MontanaFair Night Shows. It does not apply throughout the entire fairgrounds.

Guests may bring the following bags into the arena:

• Clear bags no larger than 12 by 6 by 12 inches
• Small clutch bags no larger than 4.5 by 6.5 inches
• One gallon clear plastic freezer bags
• Diaper bags when accompanied by a guardian and child
• Bags required for medical equipment or accommodations

All contents must be clearly visible and identifiable to security. Decorations, pouches, or other items may not be used to hide a bag’s contents.

All approved bags will be inspected upon entry and may be inspected again inside the arena. Guests should also review the arena’s prohibited items list before arriving.

Anyone carrying a bag that does not meet the requirements will be asked to return it to their vehicle. Bag-check services are not available.

Diaper Bag Exceptions:  Diaper bags must be carried by a guardian entering with a child and must contain childcare supplies such as diapers and wipes. They are not subject to the standard size limit but will be screened before entry.

Medically Necessary Bags:  Larger bags are allowed only when required to carry medical equipment or accommodations that cannot fit inside an approved clear bag. Examples include:

• An insulated lunchbox needed to keep medication cold
• An oxygen tank carrier
• A bag needed to carry a lactation pump

Smaller medical supplies that fit inside an approved clear bag do not qualify for the exception. This includes medications, pill bottles, EpiPens, inhalers, syringes, and snacks needed for diabetes management.
