As many Montanans prepare to wrap up the summer in the next few weeks, most of us still have one big summer bash left.

Labor Day Weekend has been the unofficial swan song to summer for years. It's a huge 3 day holiday with folks hitting the highways, lakes, rivers, and backyard bar-b-qs. Oh, and then there's the drinking. Lots of drinking.

While it shouldn't have to be said, the fact that Montana is one of the most dangerous states with regards to drunk drivers, it's your annual reminder that while we should all enjoy the upcoming holiday, you need to make sure you're safe and have alternative transportation.

How dangerous are Montana roads on Labor Day Weekend?

According to one source, Montana ranks in the Top 5 most dangerous states to drive during Labor Day Weekend. In fact, according to data provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the risk of being killed on a Montana highway during Labor Day Weekend increases by almost 300 percent. (271 percent)

We mentioned that Montana makes the Top 5, however, 4 other states rank higher than we do. Maine, Idaho, Hawaii, and Rhode Island all rank above The Treasure State with Maine having a 507 percent increase for the holiday.

It's important to remember that drinking and driving aren't the only causes for accidents in Montana have the holiday weekend. Increased traffic from last-minute tourists, wildlife, and ongoing road construction can also play a factor in the fatality figures.
