I live in Laurel, MT. My spouse is from here and I moved in with her and the kids 18 years ago. The entire time I've lived here, I've always wondered what's up with the giant, cinderblock wall in the middle of town.

The wall that stands alone.

If you don't frequent our great little town, perhaps you've never noticed the huge wall that sits just south of Main Street, next to the train tracks (although it's impossible to miss). I floundered through the snow today to get a better look and I'm no closer to understanding why the wall was built, or what purpose it serves.

The wall doesn't appear to keep anything in or out.

This thing is impressively large; I estimate it to be over 15 feet tall and at least 100 yards long. It's made of cinderblocks, with a juncture in the middle of the wall that has a big, shiny, utility box next to it, likely containing some sort of railroad stuff.

I don't have a clue what it's for. We can assume it was built by the railroad, as it sits on railroad land, but when? And why? It's directly next to the train tracks, but it seems to serve no purpose.

So, what's the story with this odd wall?

My kid thought "Maybe they were going to make a huge building but only got one wall done?" Interesting theory, but probably not correct. If you happen to know the story behind this weird wall, could you reach out to me? My email is michael.foth@townsquaremedia.
