Meet Maple, a Pointer mix.

Maple arrived at YVAS as a stray. She's a six-year-old Pointer mix and when she bounced into our studio today, she lit up the room with her energy and personality. For six, she acts like a much younger dog and is very friendly.

Maple is ready to adopt now at Yellowstone Valley Animal Shelter.

Unlike some energetic dogs we've met, Maple is also quite gentle. Derek Wulf, Humane Outreach Coordinator at the shelter told us that Maple may be partially deaf, but her disability doesn't seem obvious. Wulf said that dogs rely heavily on visual cues, and training Maple shouldn't be more challenging than any other dog.

Free adoptions continue through July 7th at YVAS.

Two weeks ago, Yellowstone Valley Animal Shelter reached critical capacity. Every kennel and crate was filled to overflowing. To help spur adoptions, the shelter waived ALL FEES to adopt any pet. Puppies, adult dogs, kittens, and cats... adoptees could take home a new pet for ZERO dollars.

Occupancy at the shelter has stabilized a bit, but an influx of strays typically occurs every 4th of July holiday as dozens of dogs and cats escape fences and run loose because of the noise. The shelter is continuing their FREE ADOPTIONS on all pets through July 7th.

Thank you, Billings for a record-setting number of adoptions.

Here's a heartwarming stat: From June 22 to July 2, the shelter had 152 pet adoptions! You can browse many of the available animals currently available for adoption at YVAS here. Remember to microchip your pets ($20, no appointment necessary) and keep your info updated.

If your dog runs off during the 4th of July holiday, check the shelter to see if they've been picked up. Thank you, Shipton's Big R for supporting animal adoption in the Billings area.

In many cases, little more than a farmhouse remains of these once bustling Montana prairie towns. Here are 15 communities in eastern Montana that are barely more than a ghost town.
