Right around the time that the Yellowjackets and hornets start to give up for the year in Montana, another pesky insect typically makes its presence known. The boxelder bug. If they haven't shown up on your porch, eaves, doors, and window sills yet, they will soon.

These little critters, Boisea trivittata, for you Latin fans, are basically the roommates none of us asked for. They’re native across much of North America, and here in Montana, they thrive wherever you’ll find boxelder trees. And since those trees are everywhere around town (especially near rivers and backyards), it’s no wonder the bugs are too.

Why are box elder bugs trying to get into my house?

They want to crash where it’s warm. You’ll spot them slipping under siding, hanging out in garages, or sneaking past that window screen you’ve been meaning to fix since 2021.

Unlike termites, they’re not chewing through your walls. Unlike mosquitoes, they’re not biting you. And unlike stinkbugs, they don’t unleash chemical stench when squished. Mostly, they’re just mildly gross houseguests who leave the occasional stain on your curtains.

If you’d rather not live with an indoor bug colony this fall, you’ve got options:

  • Seal the gaps. Doors, windows, crawlspaces—if there’s a crack, they’ll find it.

  • Rake the buffet. Boxelder seeds on the ground are essentially a food source for bugs. Get rid of them.

  • Soap ‘em down. Mix five tablespoons of liquid detergent (or half a cup of powdered laundry soap) with a gallon of water, then spray it directly on clusters of bugs. It works. Note: It might also be rough on your plants.

  • Or call the pros. Pest control companies in Montana can usually help, some with eco-friendly options.

Boxelder bugs aren’t here to terrorize you.

They’re just looking for a cozy place to chill. Think of them as the annoying neighbors of the insect world. You don’t have to like them, but you don’t have to panic either.
