Detroit, Mich., might not be close to the sand and surf, but that didn't stop Dierks Bentley from taking his Somewhere on a Beach Tour to the Motor City on Sunday night (May 22). After opening sets from Tucker Beathard, Cam and Randy Houser, the country star took the stage to perform in front of a sold-out crowd at the DTE Energy Music Theatre.

Bentley kicked off the show with "Up on the Ridge," followed by "Free and Easy" and "Tip It on Back," before taking a break for a moment to admit that the concert was the "biggest show" he's ever played (more than 15,000 fans were in attendance). More inclined to keep the music playing than fill his set with conversation, Bentley launched into "Am I the Only One," "5-1-5-0," "Say You Do" and "Lot of Leavin' Left to Do," walking all over the stage and even up the stairs to a second level throughout many of the songs.

After more than 30 minutes of non-stop music, the Arizona native finally paused to take a drink and chat with the rowdy crowd. Although Bentley was given a cup of hot tea, presumably for his voice, he dumped the tea out to drink from his appropriately colored black solo cup, earning thunderous applause.

"My name's Dierks Bentley, and I'll be your head bartender tonight," the singer quipped. "I ain't here to put on a show. I'm here to have a damn good time," he added, pulling out his phone to take a video of the screaming crowd.

Bentley then introduced "What the Hell Did I Say," one of the new songs from his upcoming Black album, explaining, "The worst thing I do is tonight, when I leave you guys, I'm going to get on my bus, we're going to listen to classic country music ... Somewhere around 2AM or 3AM, I'm going to text Alison Krauss, because that's what I do when I get drunk."

He continued, "[My drummer] knows when he hears Alison Krauss, I've got about a half hour left in me. And then, about two days later, I'll call him and be like, 'Oh my gosh, Alison Krauss texted me. What's up?' And I realize that I had drunk-texted her at 3:00 in the morning. So I decided I would record a song on this next record about drinking and cell phones."

Bentley next sang  "I Hold On" and "Every Mile a Memory," easily segueing into the title track of Black. With fans spread out as far as the eye could see, the singer walked through the crowd for "Feel the Fire," landing on a stage in the middle of the audience. Then, Bentley was joined by Cam and Houser for a cover version of the Eagles' classic "Take It Easy," before sharing "Freedom" from Black while navigating his way back to stage and ending the night with "Somewhere on a Beach," "What Was I Thinkin'" and "Sideways."

As if the 90-minute set wasn't enough, Bentley wrapped up the night with an unforgettable encore: While the nose of a plane emerged, Bentley invited The Boot and other reporters and friends to join him onstage for his final song, "Drunk on a Plane." It was an epic ending to an unforgettable evening.

Bentley's Somewhere on a Beach Tour will head to New York, Louisiana and Florida later this month; a list of all of his upcoming shows is available on his websiteBlack will be available on Friday (May 27); it is available for pre-order at Amazon and iTunes.
