Gubernatorial candidate Greg Gianforte was on our show today and I asked him about the 4 billion dollar pension fund liability that we face. I asked him how we are going to pay the bill. The answer was revive the economy, get more high tech jobs in the state and possibly consider a new state and self-funded account.

 

The fact is that no one in Montana has an answer.  You could re-direct 10 million a year in that fund and it would take 400 years to make it solvent.  Public pension funds all around the country are going broke and breaking states.  The only answer is a state run 401k with matching contributions for all new-comers, then maybe in 400 years we will have our head above water...
