Valentine's day is just over a week away and many people are struggling with what to get their significant other. I am in the single crowd this year, so this holiday doesn't affect me, but I did want to share an observation: If the amount of money you spend for your loved one on Valentine's Day determines how happy they are with you, I would strongly suggest you reevaluate your definition of "love".

I've had my share of both kinds of Valentine's Days - the kinds where I had the money to do the things I wanted to do, and a few where I was flat broke. My financial situation didn't necessarily determine how good or bad Valentine's Day was. It was the recipient, not the gift.

One big exception I should point out.  If you just bought yourself a 70" TV and consequently have to get your girlfriend a handwritten certificate for a free back rub, that's a little different.
