Bluegrass star Del McCoury will receive a special honor from the Berklee College of Music during his upcoming concert at the prestigious school.

McCoury will be honored with an American Roots Master Award during a show, 'Inspired by Muddy and Monroe,' held on Sept. 12, which will also include jazz and blues singer Catherine Russell. Former head of the string department Matt Glaser will serve as the show's director.

“The inspiration for this concert came from a wonderful book by Jim Rooney entitled 'Bossman: Bill Monroe and Muddy Waters,'" Glaser explains. "We wanted to envision Monroe and Waters playing together in the same band, exploring and sharing each other’s repertoires: bluegrass musicians playing repertoire from the blues tradition, and blues musicians playing music from the bluegrass canon.”

The show, which is intended to serve as both an educational and cultural opportunity, will also include performances by faculty and staff of the school. Tickets are available for purchase here.

The 75-year-old is spending much of the next few months on the road. In addition to his show at Berklee, McCoury will perform in New York, Maine and Missouri. See all of his upcoming shows here.
