‘Game of Thrones’ Season 3 FX Reel Goes Inside the Magic

‘Game of Thrones’ season 4 seems to weigh heavier by the day, waiting until spring 2014 for a premiere that seems so removed from the recent Comic-Con 2013 appearance. Regardless, there can be no argument that HBO gave us its most visually impressive and jaw-dropping season to date this past year, so lets go back to celebrate ‘Game of Thrones’ season 3 with the full FX reel from SpinVFX!

Among the creature and location effects revealed in the above video, featured most prominently is the creation of the terrifying ice wall that Jon Snow and his Wildling cohorts scaled, which contained far less CGI than we’d thought. Says the company of achieving the massive feat:

Comprised of over 80 shots, Spin created a 700′ ft wall, a couple miles in length (real world scale) that would hold up from any distance and any angle. Spin then simulated the entire ice slide event, shooting it from all cameras set up in the sequence that created a sense of scale and continuity over the sequence, playing out the action in real time.

“The Ice Wall was one of the most compelling sequences for us. The 3D build provided the camera range required to deliver the drama and fear of the climb, and of course, the realism of the ice slide”, says Doug Campbell, VFX Supervisor.

While we wait for ‘Game of Thrones’ season 4, HBO has cast in the important roles of the latest run Roger Ashton-Griffiths as Mace TyrellPedro Pascal as Prince Oberyn “The Red Viper” Martell, Indira Varma as his lover Ellaria Sand, and ‘Sherlock‘ star/writer Mark Gatiss in an unknown role.

Outside of those familiar with George R.R. Martin’s books, relatively little is known of ‘Game of Thrones’ season 4, though we recently learned that previous season characters Lysa Arryn (Kate Dickie), Ser Alliser Thorne (Owen Teale), Rorge (Andy Beckwith) and Janos Slynt (Dominic Carter) would all return, among others. We recently saw the full list of writers and directors for the 2014 season emerge, revealing that season 2 “Blackwater” helmer Neil Marshall will return for the always-pivotal ninth episode.

You can check out the ‘Game of Thrones’ season 3 FX reel above, and tell us in the comments what visual feats you’re most excited to see in season 4!
