Granger Smith has a refreshed perspective on life as he’s been recovering from a nasty stage fall in December of 2016.

In an interview with People, Smith says the scary accident that left him with two broken ribs and a punctured lung has made him appreciate life more, especially his wife and kids. His six-week recovery led him to a variety of self-healing remedies including yoga, cold water therapy and meditation, as well as incorporating raw food into his diet. “That got me into all kinds of things about finding happiness and finding peace,” the singer says.

He shares that the accident, which left him on the couch for multiple weeks, provided him the opportunity to bond with his young children, London, Lincoln and River. He made a game out of his injuries called “Missions” in which his two eldest children helped him accomplish simple tasks like putting on his socks.

The singer also says that he formed a particularly special bond with his 9-month-old son, who was on his hip “constantly” once he was able to carry him again. “I feel great, full motion, and now looking back on this time, I’m better because of [the accident] in a lot of ways,” the country star says.

The “If the Boot Fits” singer also reconnected with his wife Amber in between self-improvement activities that found him reorganizing several rooms in their home. “I was home with Amber longer than I’ve ever been since I’ve known her. She still likes me. That’s a good sign,” he says.

The scary stage fall took place on Dec. 2 at the Starland Ballroom in Sayreville, N.J., while Smith was singing his signature hit, “Backroad Song.” He was standing on a monitor when it gave way and sent him tumbling into a metal barricade. In spite of the injuries, Smith got back onstage to finish the song.

Now that Smith is back onstage, his 2017 looks bright. He recently performed at the coveted CRS New Faces of Country Music show in Nashville alongside Maren Morris, Drake White, William Michael Morgan and Jon Pardi.
