Every year, racing fans, horse lovers, debutantes and country music stars flock to the Kentucky Derby for a day (or an entire weekend, for some) of horse racing, mint juleps and Old South-style fun. Of course, the derby is all about the horses and the galas — unless you’re one of the fashionable folks who would rather just take in the dresses, suits and hats. This year, Miranda Lambert looked to Kate Middleton for fashion inspiration, and the result was a world-class derby hat atop her head.

“She definitely looked to Kate Middleton for her Derby hat style,” the singer’s stylist, Tiffany Gifford, told InStyle of the hat, which was crafted by Giovannio New York. “Miranda specifically asked for a fascinator this year because the big hat she wore last year was so heavy it hurt her neck! She loved the little cage on the front because it was just the right amount of retro.”

The lacy black hat was the perfect addition to Lambert’s printed Lela Rose strapless dress, red Charlotte Olympia pumps and Colette jewels.

One look at Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge (that’s Kate Middleton, if y’all aren’t so fancy) will tell you exactly where Lambert found her couture inspiration! Kate might be a fashion plate across the pond, but her sense of style definitely translates to the Kentucky Derby. Although, Miranda Lambert seems to look good in anything she wears — so that fact accounts for most of her good taste.
