George Jones cracks this Top 40 Country Songs of May 2013 list after his late April death propelled his song ‘He Stopped Loving Her Today’ into the Top 20 on digital sales charts. The hit — arguably the greatest of all time — also found a new home on country radio, especially on stations that had focused mostly on new up and comers. The newbies still dominate this list, with the top spots going to three of the biggest stars of the last decade.

Tim McGraw‘s collaboration with Taylor Swift and Keith Urban just misses out on the No. 1 slot. ‘Highway Don’t Care’ ranks No. 2 this month, but with continued strong sales and ascent up the charts, he’s got a real shot for next month. Miranda Lambert, Blake Shelton and George Strait are three others with singles inside the Top 10 in May 2013. But it’s a country cover that tops them all.

Find new songs from Scotty McCreery, Chris Young, Hunter Hayes and Luke Bryan inside the Top 40.

The list of the Top 40 Country Songs for May 2013 is compiled from Billboard chart data and sales figures, in addition to staff opinion and reader feedback.
