Transformers 4‘ has newly designed autobots, a whole new human cast and some pretty badass-looking dinobots, but according to director Michael Bay, all of that is just the tip of the iceberg. Ahead of the June 27 premiere, Bay revealed that ‘Transformers 5′ and ‘Transformers 6′ aren’t as far off as we think, as ‘Age of Extinction’ will kickstart an all-new trilogy. Plus, the man with a penchant for explosions dropped a few new tidbits about the forthcoming dinobot-filled extravaganza.

Hunker down, folks, because this is going to be a long ride.

Speaking with EW, Michael Bay declared that ‘Transformers 4′ is “the first of a new trilogy. I’m not necessarily sure that I’m doing ['Transformers 5' and 'Transformers 6'], but that’s what it’s meant for.” There’s certainly plenty of story from which to bounce off, including the first ever appearance of dinobots in a live-action film universe.

As EW notes, the origin story for this specific breed of bots varies from the comics to the animated series, and Bay has a new one to add, though he’s not prepared to kiss and tell. “I like to keep things very much in the dark. But yes, you’ll understand why they’re there when you see the movie. If you think I’m supposed to give away a lot of story points? No way! Keep it secret.” Though we know that Grimlock, as depicted in the new photo from EW, is the leader of the dinobots and looks pretty awesome charging at Optimus (as seen in the trailer) and breathing fire.

In addition to the new ‘Transformers’ trilogy, Bay also dropped a ton of information about that mysterious character who can transform his head into a canon. Fans have already correctly speculated his identity, but the director now confirms that he is indeed Lockdown.

Lockdown is an interesting character. He travels the galaxy, he works for somebody else. And he’s here for one person, one alien, and then he’s out of here,” Bay says. “So he doesn’t really want to take sides. The cause and balance of the galaxy is kind of messed up when different species play with different species. And that opens up a whole other gigantic world for Transformers.

Lockdown’s ship has a lot of meaning that can go into other movies. There’s a lot of backstory about that ship that’s not laid out here,” he says. “You’re going to see a few things where you’re like ‘What is that? And what is that?’ And you’re going to see a couple shots like, ‘Wait a minute, who are they?’ But we don’t answer those questions.

In ‘Transformers 4,’ the government “wants to wipe out all the Transformers,” says star Mark Wahlberg. “Optimus has lost all faith in humankind, and I’m trying to convince him there is still good in the world and we need to work together.” Nicola Peltz and Jack Reynor star opposite the ‘Pain & Gain’ heavyweight, along with Kelsey Grammer, Stanley Tucci and T.J. Miller. We’ll keep our ears to the ground for more information on the coming trilogy, but for now, sound off in the comments on what you want to see from the franchise moving forward.
