You might think you have the greatest pet in the world, but that's probably because you don't watch much TV. Instead of a cat that secretly hates you, fictional pets can be dragons or loyal household animals who stick by your side as you step out into the great unknown, rather than eating the contents of your bathroom trashcan the second you're out the door. We've compiled a list of the 10 coolest pets in fiction. Just don't tell your real pet -- they might get jealous that they're not as awesome as these animal pals, and, if you own a cat, try to kill you in your sleep.

1. Grey Wind, 'Game of Thrones'

Robb of House Stark, the newly crowned King of the North, is feared not only for his prowess in battle and military strategy, but because of his awesome pet: a viciously loyal direwolf. Grey Wind has no qualms about chomping off a finger or three or even scaring the bejeezus out of the Kingslayer, Jamie Lannister. Where do we sign up to get one of these wolves?

2. Hedwig, 'Harry Potter'

Harry's adorable snowy owl is way more useful than your terminally suspicious mailman-hater German Shepherd -- she actually fetches Harry's mail and never complains about the long distances she has to travel. Hedwig is also resourceful -- she tracks down Sirius Black while he's in hiding without any difficulty. This loyal owl meets a heartbreaking fate in the 7th book, but Hedwig's memory lives on as one of the most awesome fictional pets. Whoops! Spoilers, guys.

3. Drogon, Rhaegal and Viserion, 'Game of Thrones'

When Khaleesi Daenerys Targaryen manages to bring back the long-extinct dragons in the season one finale of 'Game of Thrones,' many viewers aww'd at just how adorable they were. While these dragons may look adorable now, they will get bigger and make direwolves seem like those beagle puppies they test shampoo on.

In season two, they destroy a sorcerer who is out to keep the Mother of Dragons and her hatchlings for themselves. Lesson learned: do not meddle in the affairs of dragons, lest you be used as a human torch.

4. Salem, 'Sabrina the Teenage Witch'

Who didn't beg their parents for a black cat as a child after watching 'Sabrina the Teenage Witch'? Kids who couldn't watch TV, that's who. Sadly, your average black cat is not a snarky sorcerer trapped in the body of a cat as punishment. Salem was a series regular, and despite his sarcastic demeanor, he would (try to) help Sabrina or give her advice. This furry feline helped change the idea of black cats from being unlucky into cute, adoptable pets.

5. Ghost, 'Game of Thrones'

Jon Snow's direwolf is the perfect pet: he's quiet, and when he escapes he always finds a way to return to his owner. This loyal wolf is also intelligent: Ghost brought back a hand from a White Walker to Jon Snow and his brothers of the Night's Watch. He also alerted Jon to the presence of another White Walker that would've killed him and Lord Commander Jorah Mormont. Why can't most dogs be as awesome as Ghost?

6. Saphira, 'Eragon'

Unlike Dany's dragons in 'Game of Thrones,' Saphira can actually communicate with Eragon via telepathy, which makes it easier for the two to defeat the forces of Galbatorix. (What? Don't act like you've never seen 'Eragon.')

Saphira also has more control over her magic, and she's pretty creative: she made a glass memorial for Brom to ease her rider's sorrow. While the 'Game of Thrones' dragons may be a bit more dangerous, Saphira is the easier pet to take care of because she can talk as easily as any human.

7.  Meeko, 'Pocahontas'

This adorable little raccoon from Disney's much-beloved hit movie 'Pocahontas' is a protective sidekick and takes a while to warm up to her master's love interest, John Smith. His inquisitive nature and good-natured theft helps Pocahontas save the day, too: if Meeko hadn't filched Smith's compass, Pocahontas would've never connected it with her dream of a spinning arrow, and John Smith wouldn't have survived the clash between the Powhatan tribes and the Virginia Company settlers. Just like happened in actual history. Ask anyone.

8. Gizmo, 'Gremlins

This adorable little Mogwai is compassionate towards his new human caretakers -- he wouldn't even eat food left out for him at midnight to avoid turning into a Gremlin. Plus he's smart -- he knew to open the window blinds to kill Stripe once and for all. Despite the difficulty of owning a Mogwai (no feeding after midnight, no water and no bright light), Gizmo's intelligence, loyalty and sheer cuteness make him a really awesome pet.

9. Thorn, 'Inheritance Cycle: Eldest'

The ferocious red dragon who is bonded to Eragon's half-brother Murtagh makes his appearance in the sequel to 'Eragon' and is seriously awesome. Readers may not "see" him talk much, but his prowess in battle is noteworthy.

Thanks to King Galbatorix enhancing his growth, Thorn is a fit match for Saphira and just as fearsome, especially since he killed Glaedar, one of the oldest remaining dragons. (What? Like you've never read the sequel to 'Eragon.') Thorn does whatever it takes to protect his rider and redeems himself in the end by helping Saphira take down Galbatorix's dragon, Shruikan.

10. Djali, 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame'

Esmeralda's feisty little goat is one of the best-trained pets in film ever: Djali dances with Esmeralda as part of her act in order to help them make enough money to survive. He's intelligent and protective too. Djali knows Frodo is bad news and blows a raspberry at him early on in the movie, as well as head-butting soldiers who are after his mistress. It takes him a while to warm up to Phoebus, Esmeralda's would-be suitor, but as any pet owner knows, animals have a sixth sense, and if they like someone, there's a good chance that you will, too. Plus, who wouldn't want to own an adorable pet goat that can dance? You could definitely win the next season of 'America's Go(a)t Talent' if your pet was as cool as Djali! Yeah. That just happened.
