This morning, the Flakes read the latest report on high school enrollments in the state of Montana.  As you would expect, a lot of schools are growing.  And some of the small town schools are getting even smaller.

When in comes to enrollment, Billings West is the second largest school in the state with 1,883 students.  West ranks just behind Bozeman High, which has nearly 2,000 kids.  Of course, the folks in Bozeman are trying to build a new school to eliminate some of their overcrowding.  Billings Senior isn't far behind with 1,737 students.  Skyview has an enrollment of 1,557 this year.

As for the Class A schools, Belgrade is the largest in the state.  They've got 854 students. Laurel High is the third largest, with 649 students and Billings Central will have 331 kids this year.  Huntley Project is the 4th largest Class B school with an enrollment of 258 and Shepherd ranks just behind them with 254 students.

Of course the smallest schools are in Class C.  Judith Gap will have 6, count 'em 6, students this year.  Belfry only has 8.  Which begs the question, why don't we save some money and consolidate some of these smaller schools?  After all, Judith Gap has the same number of principles as Shepherd does.

Some smaller schools have already consolidated their athletic departments.  We never like it when jobs get eliminated, but it just doesn't make sense to have more teachers than students.  And socially, those small town students would have a better time in a bigger school.  Nobody wants to take their sister to the prom.  Although, Mark contends his sister is an excellent dancer.  Paul was quick to point out that she's also a great kisser.
