Yesterday, the Flakes talked about a student from Skyview High School who is speaking out against a new dress code that prohibits girls from wearing yoga pants and leggings.  When we posted the story on Facebook, we had no idea the topic would be so controversial.

Here's some of the comments:

Ila Emmett Painter If they ban yoga pants for girls than they need to ban the pants that the boys wear that show half of their ass and their underwear!

Evelina Job If they are putting this in place for girls the boys shouldnt be allowed to wear skinny jeans or wranglers

Valerie Prentiss McNeill Given the recent news coverage, I believe it is also a distraction for teachers. Dressing properly is a life lesson, not a consequence.

Macy Cyr I agree. We should be holding ourselves to higher standards. Dressing properly is just apart of being a mature person & functioning properly in the real world.

Jan Byrd They do not belong in school OR work. Yes they might be comfortable but..... As for boys-what happened to the belt? Take pride in how you look not just put something on because it is comfortable!

Kyla Chamberlain Props to the girl fighting that. This is ridiculous. 'Im so glad I graduated last year or I'd be sent home every day for wearing leggings. They also banned students from wearing tiaras, cat ears and cat tails. Yes some students actually wear that with their daily attire. Bottom line is, we should be able to express by dressing up. My friend at Skyview saw a dean say to a girl who was wearing a tiara,"we aren't allowing students to wear costumes to school this year sweetie" and made her take the tiara off. And not only that, students are sitting down all day. They have 5 minutes between each class to walk to their next classes. Boys are distracted by anything. Its that time of their life where everything about a girl is distracting to them. And butts look great in jeans too. So they might as well make them wear uniforms. But girls can still rock a nice butt in a uniform so it makes no difference.

Michael Eliason I am a sophomore at SVHS, and I think that leggings make you become an object, if all boys are "distracted", then they should be distracted by what is in their brain and intellect.

Sara Baier Yoga pants are not pants, they are work out attire. Every female should consider the attire they are wearing, and the message it is sending. Your clothing should be modest!

Greg French Let's require burkas

Mackenzie Barrett This is so sexist. Boys can wear tight ass underarmor shirts and that's not distracting? If distraction is their only argument for this then maybe society and authority figures (aka school officials) should stop conditioning boys to see young women as sexual objects and not a human being. This is 2014. Women are people who can dress how they want and if that's for comfort then so be it. These double standards will just continue unless more women like this girl stand up for themselves and their bodies.

Erica Fischer I went to Skyview and was wearing shorts one day and was told to change them by a dean when a girl right in front me had shorts on that we're almost showing her butt cheeks! There is a lot of favoritism there it's not fair. Honestly if they don't like what the kids wear then make everyone wear a uniform. Makes life simple and then everyone is the same! Problem solved! Going to school is about education not about what girls are wearing and that's very sexist! It's so wrong!

Michael Eliason I am a Sophomore at Skyview, and frankly, boys don't show their legs. It has gotten so bad, that you can see the outline of their underwear. The rules weren't meant to be mean, they were meant to make girls not be objects but young, respectable ladies of the real world. Thank You.

LillianLee Anderson After going Skyview for 4 years, I saw more than my fair share of thongs. Sure yoga pants are considered pants, but the material is so darn see through. If you don't call that sexualized clothing I don't know what is. Although it would be more helpful if Skyview's dress code was against low cut shirts or showing your bras. Instead the rule states you can't show bra straps. Girls come on. If I can see your underwear then you are making yourself sexualized.

Justin Sullivan Communism...

Shelbe St Pierre ... Do you know how many people wear whatever the hell they want in college? Sure yoga pants are annoying sometimes, but saying that "teenage boys get distracted" is the stupidest message for this entire thing. Instead of teenage boys.. I think you mean grown adult teachers School board. Seriously. Get your priorities straight.

Kenadi L Eiler I'm sorry but I don't see how those yoga pants are sexually explicit or whatever.

Lanni McNaney Then please let's ban shorts cause that shows to much leg. Ohh time to cover them ankles ladies, and no more jeans, time to step back into full length dresses cause that's what women were intended to wear. Come on people! I have seen more girls look more modest in leggings than I have of girls in booty shorts! They cover more. Skinny or tight jeans are just the same thing and no one would dare to ban those!

Katelyn Robertson Hahaha how are yoga pants not pants?! That's a silly thing to say. They may have started out as workout attire, but then they became a trend and now they are worn about as much, if not more than sweatpants. They don't show skin. They are form fitting, but so are the majority of jeans (skinny or not). I would think cleavage and short shorts/skirts are the bigger distraction in schools. And for those of you saying that yoga pants don't belong in the school/work environment, have you ever been to a nursing home? Many of them allow their CNAs and nurse aides to wear yoga pants, as they are comfortable and easy to move in.

Danielle Rosin Wearing yoga pants and skinny jeans are the same things for girls...they are both skin tight and just an FYI when girls wear yoga pants or leggings they're usually wearing a sweatshirt so there for its for comfort not for style

Jennifer Rider Wessel What is this girl going to do when she gets a job! Or goes to an interview? Will she say "sorry I am wearing this for comfort !?" There are restrictions on clothing all throughout life. She better get used to it!

Maleigha Garza That's discrimination to the girls!

Ryan Clark Agreed. I also think guys should be able to wear them as well and if girls are distracted or offended by a mans budge then it's their fault too

Needless to say, this topic has touched a nerve.  Got a comment?  Let's hear it.  Drop us a line, flakes103@yahoo.com.
