A Heavy Loss For Yellowstone County: Remembering Chaplain Larry Williams
Today, the people of Yellowstone County come together to honor the life and legacy of Chaplain Larry Williams. Larry was more than just a valued member of the Detention Facility; he was a dedicated public servant whose caring spirit touched lives throughout our community. Beginning his career as a Detention Officer from 1984 to 1989, and later returning as a chaplain for nearly 12 years, Larry offered steadfast support, wisdom, and compassion well beyond the facility's walls.
A Career Marked by Dedication
Chaplain Williams was respected by both officers and inmates. Whether offering words of encouragement or simply listening, he was someone people could count on. His dedication, knowledge, and unwavering commitment did not go unnoticed, and his positive attitude remained even during difficult times.
A Trusted Presence For Officers And Inmates
Those closest to Larry say that he had a way of making everyone feel respected. Officers leaned on his calm perspective and gentle encouragement, and inmates could tell he genuinely cared about their well-being. There was something about his presence. Maybe it was the way he listened, or how he remembered the little things about a person's life. Whatever it was, it made it easy to trust him.

A Legacy of Service Recognized
Just last month, he was given the Operational Support Staff of the Year award, a well-deserved recognition of his lasting impact. Even while facing illness, he remained positive and committed to those around him, leaving a strong impression on all who worked with him.
Remembering His Positive Spirit
Ask anyone at the Detention Facility, and you’ll hear the same words over and over: hardworking, compassionate, uplifting, and genuine. But more than any title or award, it’s Larry’s kindness; his real, everyday kindness. And it’s the way he made people feel that folks most often talk about.

Extending Our Deepest Condolences
Our heartfelt condolences go out to Chaplain Williams’ family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time. Yellowstone County is deeply grateful for his years of service and the lasting impact he made.
