It turns out Mark wasn't making any of this up. There really is a a national competition to determine who is the fastest "texter" in the United States. It's taken very seriously apparently, considering that there is a a $50,000 prize for the champion! The 2011 champion, Austin Weirschke, will be coming back to defend his title this year.
