Duane ‘Dog’ Chapman Warns of Scammers After Beth’s Death
Duane 'Dog' Chapman wants fans to know he is not going to ask for your money, but scammers sure will. One month after Beth Chapman's death, the television star says he's hearing that people have sent as much as $5,000 to imposters.
Dog's team did not mince words on Facebook, telling people to not accept any friend request from someone who appears to be him or his wife. "HE DOES NOT send friend requests and she can't," the note reads. Beth Chapman died after a battle with cancer on June 26, 2019. Immediately afterward he let people know they didn't need money.
DO NOT respond to ANY request for money. DO NOT send any sort of currency in any shape or form by and through ANY mechanism. HE DOES NOT ask individuals for money EVER EVER EVER!
The media team is overwhelmed with removing fake accounts. I am hearing some people have sent as much as $5,000. You do not have to send these to me to verify this for you. When you see them REPORT THEM. ALL OF THEM.
Some are taking advantage of your grief and like any con - will use YOUR emotions against you.
Social media scammers posing as celebrities are a fact of life in 2019. Typically the real celebrity's Facebook, Instagram or Twitter handle will be modified by one letter or number, easily fooling a casual fan. Messages from scammers are often overly emotional and contain poor spelling and grammar. The general rule of thumb is if there is no blue checkmark, it's not legit, and no celebrity with any credibility will ask for money or gifts over social media.
The Chapman family has grieved publicly since Beth's death last month, inviting fans and the media to several memorials and speaking liberally to reporters. This level of on-camera emotion is rare, but Dog has been especially open with all details, including the last words his wife said to him before going in a coma.
Beth Chapman does star in the first season of Dog's newest television venture. Dog's Most Wanted begins on WGN on Sept. 4.
