Hear Maren Morris’ New Single, ‘Rich’
Maren Morris newest single, "Rich," is irreverent, sassy and 100-percent catchy. Readers can press play above to listen to the song, from Morris' debut album, Hero.
In "Rich," Morris sings of a guy she falls for again and again -- only to end up with a broken heart. The singer counts her heartbreaks in nickels, dimes and dollars: "If I had a dollar every time that I swore you off / And a $20 every time that i picked up when you called / And a crisp new Benjamin for when you're here then gone again / And a dollar every time I was right about you after all," she sings.
The best part of "Rich," though is its chorus -- a bouncy, image-filled rendition of what Morris would do with all that money: "Head-to-toe Prada / Benz in the driveway, yacht in the water / Vegas at the Mandarin, high-roller gambling / Me and Diddy drippin' diamonds like Marilyn ..."
The chorus of "Rich" ends with an expletive from Morris: "S--t, I'd be rich" (of course, the radio version will be censored). Though some country artists may shy away from cussing on their albums, Morris is simply being true to herself.
"I just try to write how I would say it. I'm only shooting myself in the foot if I write it in a way where I wouldn't speak like that," Morris tells Rolling Stone. "I don't get this whole glossing over fun little tidbits of people's personalities. That's not how we talk ... But it's also just fun to throw in colorful language, whether it's a cuss word or not. I want people to listen to this and feel like it's their friend saying it to them."
Morris released Hero in June of 2016. Of the project, she says, "This record really encapsulates everything that’s been bouncing around my head for the past three years. It’s woven with every thread of my influences, which pulls from the country and R&B landscapes.” As far as the title, she adds, "They say never meet your heroes, but what if you just became your own?”
