Montana Hunters: Access Information for Private Lands Coming Soon
If you’re planning to get out and hunt in Montana this fall, here’s some helpful news. Starting August 11, updated information will be available for the Block Management Area (BMA) program, and later in the month, you’ll be able to check out the newest Upland Game Bird Enhancement Program (UGBEP) guide.
What is the Block Management Area Program?
Montana’s BMA program helps hunters access nearly 7 million acres of private and public land, at no cost. Thanks to partnerships with landowners, this program gives you more chances to hunt while respecting private property. The statewide BMA guide is free and includes an overview of where you can hunt, how to follow landowner rules, and how to get permission if needed.
Where to Find BMA Maps and Rules
You can pick up the BMA guide at any Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) office starting August 11. You can also view it online when it goes live at fwp.mt.gov/bma. Want a copy mailed to you? Just ask! Each area also has its own specific map and rules, which are available online, at FWP offices, or even out in the field near sign-in boxes.

UGBEP Projects Open Later This Month
Later in August, hunters can also get their hands on the UGBEP Projects Access Guide. This program covers almost 800,000 acres and is all about creating better habitats for upland game birds. The guide shows where projects like food plots, grasslands, CRP enhancements, and cover areas are located, on both private and public land.
Why These Programs Matter
Both of these programs help connect hunters with land while improving habitats and respecting property owners. It’s a win-win. Hunters get more access, and Montana’s landscapes and wildlife benefit too.
Plan Ahead and Be Respectful
Montana FWP reminds all hunters to plan their trips early, follow safety guidelines, and always be respectful to landowners. A little kindness and gratitude go a long way in keeping these access programs strong year after year.
