Constitutional Amendment 48

A project that has been in the works for a few years now, CA 48 is designed to boost digital privacy protections for citizens in Montana. It amended Article II, Section 11 of the Montana Constitution, including "Electronic data and communications" under the list of private property protected from unreasonable search and seizure.

Currently, the Montana Constitution states that citizens of Montana...

shall be secure in their persons, papers, homes and effects from unreasonable searches and seizures.

The bill gained support from the Frontier Institute, the Montana Chapter of Americans for Prosperity and the Montana Public Interest Research Group.

As the votes continue to be counted by the SOS, we'll learn more in the coming days on what else is changing in Montana.

My Take

No matter what, privacy is number one in my eyes. I've worked in IT Security for the last 10 years for various companies, alongside my radio duties, and it was paramount that our security was top notch... protecting our data from anyone and everyone trying to access it. Whether that was from bad actors, or even ones requesting access, I worked to ensure our data was safe. With this new amendment, it further protects our individual data in the modern world where everything is digital.
