The number of licensed dairies in Montana fell from 144 to 48 since the year 2000. However, the remaining dairies in Big Sky Country continue to produce a mind-blowing amount of milk, most of which is consumed locally.
With 7.16 people per square mile, Montana DOES have more cows than people. Farming and ranching is still incredibly important across the entire state. (We've got 2.51 cattle per person, BTW.)
Why are puppies so expensive? If you look in the paper many of the puppies there range from 1500 to 2500 dollars. Wow. If a dog has 8 puppies that's 12 to 20 thousand dollars per litter. I should be raising puppies instead of cows. A 600 pound calf will bring less than a puppy...
I took this photo out at Paul's the other day after we were done moving cows. We were just parked, checking out gopher holes and green grass, and talking about how fuel injection is maybe the greatest thing that's ever happened to the auto industry...
Have you noticed how much more you eat when it gets cold? Not your fault, it takes more calories to generate the heat your body needs. I've been hungry for a week straight and you can hardly keep enough hay out for cows right now.
I know it will be much warmer in 20 days though...
This is a picture of some cows we got in the middle of when my daughter and I were headed to Great Falls a couple of weeks ago.
The cows were getting moved to a different pasture and they had to move em down the highway, which is just part of living in Montana...
