Taylor Swift Recognizes Parents, Fans, Carole King During AMAs Artist of the Decade Speech
Taylor Swift was full of gratitude in accepting the Artist of the Decade award at the 2019 American Music Awards on Sunday night (Nov. 24) in Los Angeles.
Swift took the podium at the Microsoft Theater to accept the award from Carole King, a woman who as it turns out was essential listening growing up in the Swift household. Even before thanking fans, the country-turned-pop megastar talked about how her parents toted King records around from house to house, even after they had kids. That music taught Swift that transcending lives with music was possible.
“You taught me that that’s a possibility,” Swift told an emotional King. Swift's mother, Andrea, was shown on-screen several times, weeping in the front row.
The crowd was chanting Taylor's name after her epic AMAs performance until she stepped forward to speak. She gushed about how much fun she just had and how blessed she felt to share a stage with Camilla Cabello, Halsey and more.
Then she addressed her fans, as this is a fan-voted awards show.
"All that matters to me is the memories that I’ve had with you guys, with you the fans over the years," she said, wrapping her big moment. "Thank you to fans. “I love you with all of my heart,”
Bad blood has been brewing since Swift left BMLG and signed a new deal with Republic in November of 2018. Swift has previously denounced former BMLG head Scott Borchetta's decision to sell BMLG to music mogul Scooter Braun, who is her longtime adversary. Opening her performance, Swift wore a white jacket with the names of her BMLG records in black, using the same font as the Dixie Chicks used on the famous Entertainment Weekly cover from 2003.
On Nov. 14, she turned to social media to ask her fans to pressure Borchetta, Braun and the Carlyle Group, which helped finance Braun's purchase of BMLG. The superstar claimed the label denied her the right to perform her past hits on the AMAs.
