Montana is a great state for checking out celestial events.

Over the past year and a half, we've had some incredible views of the Northern Lights. That's not something we get to enjoy very often, so it's been a real treat.

The Perseids officially begin in late July, but they'll really put on a show when they peak on the night of August 12.

Peak Viewing Conditions: New Moon Advantages

This year brings even more good news. The peak will happen during a new moon, meaning there won't be bright moonlight washing out the meteors. If the weather cooperates, conditions should be about as good as they get.

Of course, this is Montana, so there are always things that can interfere with watching these meteors.

First, we need clear skies. Summer thunderstorms can always pop up, and this time of year wildfire smoke can also make stargazing tough.
