A Billings man who admitted he intended to sell pills containing carfentanil after receiving a package through the mail has been sentenced to more than four years in federal prison.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Montana, 27 year old Drury Daniel Hill was sentenced Wednesday to 49 months in prison, followed by five years of supervised release.

Hill pleaded guilty in March 2026 to attempted possession with intent to distribute carfentanil. U.S. District Judge Susan P. Watters presided over the case.

Billings Man Sentenced in Federal Carfentanil Drug Case

The sentence stems from an investigation into packages mailed to Hill while he was staying at a sober living house in Billings.

Federal prosecutors alleged in court documents that Hill had been receiving fentanyl pills through the mail. Investigators reviewed postal records in January 2026 and found multiple packages sent from an address in Missoula to Hill in Billings, according to the federal release.

The Missoula distributor had recently been arrested. Investigators later learned that person had likely connected Hill with a source in California.

Carfentanil Pills Were Mailed to a Billings Sober Living House

Law enforcement intercepted a package sent from a California address to Hill in Billings and obtained a warrant to search it.

Inside, investigators found roughly 2,000 pills that appeared to contain fentanyl. Testing later determined the pills contained carfentanil, which the U.S. Attorney’s Office release identifies as a fentanyl analogue.

Authorities replaced the pills in the package, then sent it to the Billings address while monitoring the delivery.

Prosecutors said Hill arrived at the address a short time later and picked up the package. He was arrested soon afterward.

Hill admitted to ordering the pills through the California source and told investigators he planned to sell them, according to the release.

The United States Postal Inspection Service and the Montana Division of Criminal Investigation conducted the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Colin Rubich prosecuted the case.
