I got a great email from one of our listeners/readers last week.

Remember all the hate and discontent from the wolf lover lefties after hunters had a good wolf season in 2022? We didn't even make a dent in the population. Wonder if the MT media will report and recant? -Bryan

What was Bryan referring to? New numbers from Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks show this: FWP releases 2023 wolf report; population strong after increased harvest
So basically we allowed more hunting, and yet the wolf numbers continue to be strong- AGAIN. (I shared a similar story back in March of 2022)
I spoke with Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Director Dustin Temple on Monday about that very report.
Director Temple: "We monitor wolf populations along with all of our other populations in the States. And you know, we're under a directive from the legislature to reduce the wolf population. So we're careful and measured about how we do that. But what the wolf report tells us is that wolves are doing well in Montana under state management, they should stay under state management, and the Commission will be considering the upcoming wolf hunting and trapping season at its meeting on August 16th."
We also talked about the latest translocation of grizzlies from Montana to Wyoming, and how this is another reminder that grizzlies should be taken off the endangered species list.
Director Temple: "Montana has been at the forefront of grizzly bear recovery throughout its history. The state is well positioned to catch grizzly bears when they come off the list. And we believe that Montana wildlife should be managed by folks here in Montana, in concert with landowners and sportsmen and other folks that care about wildlife. And those decisions should be made here locally, not necessarily somewhere else. And again, we've got adequate safeguards in place to make sure that grizzly bears continue to do well. This translocation is just another example of the significant commitment Montana has made to making sure grizzly bears stay recovered now and into the future."
Here's our full chat with Director Temple on Monday's Montana Talks Statewide Radio Show with Aaron Flint.
