Nation’s First Marijuana Resort Just a Ten-Hour Drive From Billings
The nation's first marijuana resort is scheduled to open this New Year's Eve in Flandreau, S.D. The resort is being constructed by the Santee Sioux tribe who has already had great success in the casino business.
South Dakota is not a state where marijuana has been decriminalized. According to the National Organization for the Legalization of Marijuana, possession of 2 ounces or less still comes with a maximum fine of $2,000 and up to one year incarceration. Back in June, however, the Justice Department outlined a new policy that allows Indian tribes to grow and sell marijuana under the same conditions as some states.
At this point, the tribe is projecting profits around $2 million per month. If that holds true, we may see more of these marijuana themed resorts coming to other tribal lands across the nation.
